Boombox meets…Lail Arad & JF Robitaille

Did your love story come after your music project or were the two of you already in love?

LA: The music came first! And the two grew in parallel…
JF: The music was the beginning of everything.

How does it feel to come back to Italy? Do you live this comeback as something exciting and special or just like going to any other country?

LA: Italy holds a very special place in our hearts. It was the first place we toured together, this time last year, and where we got the idea to try writing together too. Lots of wonderful memories. There are also many new cities on this upcoming tour, so we’re excited to see them for the first time.
JF: Italy is very important to us, it’s where this project began and we are hoping to keep coming back forever.

What is the main aim of your music project? What do you want us to enjoy and learn from your product?

LA: I’m not sure music always has an aim. If you enjoy it we’ll be happy. If you learn something, that’s a bonus!
JF: Hopefully you will hear something beautiful, and hopefully we learn something new from the audience every night. And our show is a couple hours long so that’s at least a couple hours away from the television and all the terrible news!

Your last single We Got It Coming kind of reminds listeners of a genuine and spontaneous music genre, typical of the 80s and 90s. Is this on purpose?

LA: Really?! That’s fun that it reminds you of those decades. For us the references are usually more in the 60s and 70s, but it’s cool that people hear different things.
JF: That’s great to hear. I was thinking more like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell join the Velvet Underground for a song.

Who are the artists (from any country or decade) that inspire you the most?

LA: It is perhaps too cliché to say, but Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed… they will always be at the top for me.
JF: All the greats that Lail mentioned, And I’ll add John Prine, London Wainwright and The McGarrigle Sisters (fellow Montrealers).
